Car Maintenance Myths That Are Costing You Money

Published January 25, 2026 by Your Service Book Team

The automotive world is full of well-meaning advice that was true decades ago but no longer applies. Following outdated maintenance myths doesn't just waste time — it wastes real money. Here are the most common ones.

Myth: Change Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles

This was good advice in the 1970s. Modern engines and synthetic oils have made it obsolete. Most manufacturers now recommend 5,000–10,000 mile intervals. Check your owner's manual for your specific vehicle. Changing oil too frequently is harmless to the engine but costs you $50–100 extra per unnecessary change — that adds up over years of ownership.

Myth: Premium Gas Makes Your Car Run Better

If your car doesn't require premium (check the fuel door or manual), you're wasting 30–50 cents per gallon for zero benefit. Premium fuel has a higher octane rating to prevent knock in high-compression engines. In a standard engine, it provides no extra power, no better mileage, and no cleaner combustion.

Myth: You Must Warm Up Your Car Before Driving

Modern fuel-injected engines are ready to drive within 30 seconds. Extended idling wastes fuel, increases emissions, and actually causes more engine wear than gentle driving. In cold weather, the fastest way to warm your engine is to drive it gently — not to let it idle for 10 minutes.

Myth: Dealerships Always Charge More

Not always. Dealers often run service specials that beat independent shop pricing on oil changes and tire rotations. They're also the only option for warranty and recall work, which is free. The key is comparing — get quotes from both and track your service history in your garage so you always know what's actually due.

The best defense against maintenance myths is knowing your vehicle. Use your VIN to look up manufacturer recommendations and stick to those — not what the internet or your uncle tells you.
